In the recent years the Municipality of Palermo has followed a path in order to be recognised as a sustainable city. The activities of the municipality include cultural, economical, developmental and environmental events. Specifically, in the environmental field several actions have been launched to improve air quality, to promote a sustainable mobility, to optimise waste management and to rationalise use of earth’s finite resources.

 

The aims of the Municipality of Palermo concern several fields such as energy, mobility, noise and air pollution.

 

The Municipality of Palermo carries out a lot of activities, which in the general form are: energy planning, mobility planning, acoustic pollution mapping, electromagnetic pollution mapping, air pollution monitoring, awareness raising campaigns for citizens on environmental issues.

 

The main actions regard

  • Promotion of the use of public transport vehicles, electric cars and scooters

  • Creation of a Traffic Restricted Area

  • Creation of an area of the city centre where only public transport, ZEV and LEV transport modes are permitted

  • Scooter and car sharing project and car free day

  • Methane bus purchasing and conversion of cars belonging to the municipality from petrol to methane operation

  • Purchasing of 95 electric cars, 56 electric scooters and 40 electric bicycles

  • Realization of a 24 kW photovoltaic plant

  • Developing of guidelines for an energy conscious design in new buildings and building’s restoration .

The Municipality of Palermo has also been involved in a numerous of projects partly financed by the Municipality and/or European Commission and Italian institutions. Some of them are:

  • THERMIC PLANTS INSPECTORS: coordinated by ENEA-Ministry of Employment

  • SOLAR CITY: coordinated by ENEA and the Ministry of Environment

  • CNR (NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTRE) - IEREN PROJECT: Study of energy-saving parameters in Palermo City.

  • ZEUS Project: Zero And Low Emission Vehicles In Urban Society

  • MOSES Project: Mobility Services for Urban Sustainability (Study of a sustainable mobility system within the city centre)

  • MICA-ENEA 10.000 Photovoltaic roofs programme (Ministry of the Environment)

  • Sustainable Mobility of the Urban Area of Palermo: Draft programme for environmental care to develop a telematic system of ecological vehicles management (intermodal parking) and set-up of the mobility manager.  

 

The city of Palermo has a monitoring net of air pollution:

  • recording stations placed in the centre of urban area,

  • 1 chemical laboratory for environmental analysis,

  • 1 centre of data elaboration (CRED),

  • 4 points of access to the data bank,

  • 2 points of information to public.
